Creations from Within, Vol. 2

Taking inspiration from the solo albums of hip hop artists, Edgar Fernandez uses Creations from Within, Vol. 2 as an opportunity to showcase his commitment to his craft and display ten years of artistic growth since his first solo exhibition in 2013. Disrupting the myth of the lone creative genius, Fernandez invited a group of artists with diverse talents to collaborate on the exhibited pieces, adding new perspectives and context to his artworks. The contributions from his collaborators are like features, samples, or guest producers on a hip-hop album, each facet further proof that no one makes great work alone.

The works in Creations from Within, Vol. 2 explore the stream-of-consciousness approach that has helped Fernandez express his most authentic self. The disparate works are unified through a symbolic color palette that visually and conceptually connects the images: gold represents light and energy; black symbolizes balance and groundedness; red indicates resilience and ancestral wisdom.  He hopes viewers can tap into their own creative power to transform their stories, their perspectives, and their futures.

La Aparición de nuestros Ancestros

“La aparición de nuestros Ancestors”

A dual mystical collaboration between two local POC artists with a mindset that fills their art with passion and love. This collaboration brings together the celebration of ancestral presence through the linework and vibrant colors. The exhibition also shares the power of the individual work of both artists, when together in the same space the art, creates a beautiful dance of ancestral harmony splashed on paper, wood, and canvas.

Identity Empowerment

Identity Empowerment

The themes in this exhibition: Is based on "Identity Empowerment" a theme that plays a big role in the present moment in our community, just as it did in the time of my ancestors. The artwork I have created for this show illustrates the inspiring and empowering aspects of the mask such as in the southwest, all throughout Mexico to all the way down to Central America. These paintings are expressed in a modern folk-art way, and rooted in ancestral energy. Each mask represents different characteristics that are coded inside our being. Within each mask holds a seed of empowerment to unlock inner potentials within our essence. Potentials to decolonize and reveal you to your true authentic self. These mask paintings that will be in my solo exhibition express mirror reflections that connect you to a deeper realization of yourself.
